Artistic Expression in Talent/Speech

Queen of P.I.N.K. 2008 contestant Mattie Vaughn in "Talent/Speech" Competition

During the talent/speech competition each contestant will present for three (3) minutes or less. She may dance, sing, play an instrument, etc. However, if the contestant decides not to do an artistic performance, she may recite a speech about her breast cancer experience in the time alloted. This phase of competition provides an insight into her preparatory and/or performance skills. Consideration is given as to whether her talent selection or speech recitation fits those skills and her personality. The judges will look for the quality of the presentation, the technical skill level or communication skill level, and stage presence. No live accompaniments. We want the judges and audience to focus solely on the contestant! She should have a costume or outfit to go with her presentation. She may not remove any clothing on stage with the exception of a hat, gloves, or other accessories and may only use props that are absolutely essential to the presentation itself.

For those contestants that choose to present a talent, NO TWO CONTESTANTS will be allowed to use the same music during this phase of competition unless each contestant plans to present a different type of talent performance. For example, two contestants may use the same song if one will be performing a vocal rendition and the other will be doing a dance routine. The first contestant to register a preference for a particular song gets her choice. No one else will be allowed to use that selection within the same type of talent presentation.

Each contestant must label her tape or CD with her name and song number, and rewind all tapes to the correct starting point. It is wise to bring a back-up copy just in case. Be sure to keep a practice copy as tapes or CD’s  will be left with the pageant committee after the rehearsal. All CD’s will be returned to the contestants soon after the pageant.

Criteria for Scoring: Talent/Speech Selection and Performance Distinguishes the Contestant’s Personality and Skills; Interpretive Ability; Technical Skill Level (Execution, Technique, Synchronization, and Control) or Communication Skill Level; Stage Presence; Representation of Today’s Woman; Totality of All Elements (Including Costume, Props, Music, Voice and Choreography). Was it enjoyable?
